Taking Care of Those Who Take Care of Us: Palmetto Red Cross Volunteers serving firefighters and investigators searching through the warehouse fire that took the lives of nine Charleston firefighters.

American Red Cross Palmetto Chapter: On the Scene….

2/22/08 – Smoke detectors alerted a Sheldon family of a fire which had started in their microwave oven, allowing them to evacuate safely. The Fire Department responded quickly, but their kitchen suffered major damage. Disaster Chair Richie Czark and DAT volunteer Ray Enstine responded, and the Chapter provided hotel accommodations and financial assistance for food and groceries.

2/15/08 - A Ridgeland woman was in bed when her daughter ran in to tell her a fire had started in their clothes dryer. She and her husband got their three children out of the house, and tried unsuccessfully to put out the fire. None of the family were injured, but their home suffered major damage. DAT volunteers Rich Dobson and Marguerite Miletic responded, and the Chapter provided financial assistance for replacing medications lost in the fire

2/15/08 – A St. Helena Island family of four left home, but forgot to turn off the burner under a cooking pot on their stove. A fire started which caused major damage to their mobile home. DAT volunteers Donnie Beers and Marguerite Miletic responded, and the Chapter provided hotel accommodations and financial assistance for food and clothing.

2/13/08 – Grease in a cooking pan caught fire in a Yemassee mobile home. The fire spread quickly, eventually destroying the home. The family of four escaped without injury. DAT volunteers Don Clifton and Marguerite Miletic responded, and the Chapter provided hotel accommodations and financial assistance for food and clothing.

2/6/08 – A Ridgeland man was sitting in a chair in his living room when an out of control car smashed through his front door, causing major damage to his apartment. Fortunately, he was not injured. DAT volunteers Rich Dobson and Ray Enstine responded, and the Chapter provided hotel accommodations and financial assistance for food and groceries.

Each year, Palmetto Chapter Disaster Action Teams respond to more than 80 disaster scenes, mostly single family structure fires. Last year, the Palmetto Chapter provided $58,000 in financial assistance to 103 families affected by these disasters. American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, and is made possible entirely by public donations.
