2/22/08 Smoke
detectors alerted a Sheldon family of a fire which had started in their
microwave oven, allowing them to evacuate safely. The Fire Department
responded quickly, but their kitchen suffered major damage. Disaster Chair
Richie Czark and DAT volunteer Ray Enstine responded, and the Chapter
provided hotel accommodations and financial assistance for food and
groceries.
2/15/08 - A
Ridgeland woman was in bed when her daughter ran in to tell her a fire had
started in their clothes dryer. She and her husband got their three children
out of the house, and tried unsuccessfully to put out the fire. None of the
family were injured, but their home suffered major damage. DAT volunteers
Rich Dobson and Marguerite Miletic responded, and the Chapter provided
financial assistance for replacing medications lost in the fire
2/15/08 A St.
Helena Island family of four left home, but forgot to turn off the burner
under a cooking pot on their stove. A fire started which caused major damage
to their mobile home. DAT volunteers Donnie Beers and Marguerite Miletic
responded, and the Chapter provided hotel accommodations and financial
assistance for food and clothing.
2/13/08 Grease in
a cooking pan caught fire in a Yemassee mobile home. The fire spread
quickly, eventually destroying the home. The family of four escaped without
injury. DAT volunteers Don Clifton and Marguerite Miletic responded, and the
Chapter provided hotel accommodations and financial assistance for food and
clothing.
2/6/08 A Ridgeland
man was sitting in a chair in his living room when an out of control car
smashed through his front door, causing major damage to his apartment.
Fortunately, he was not injured. DAT volunteers Rich Dobson and Ray Enstine
responded, and the Chapter provided hotel accommodations and financial
assistance for food and groceries.
Each year, Palmetto Chapter Disaster
Action Teams respond to more than 80 disaster scenes, mostly single
family structure fires. Last year, the Palmetto Chapter provided $58,000
in financial assistance to 103 families affected by these disasters.
American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, and is made possible
entirely by public donations.
